Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it stands very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled on in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were living in the area very likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing then wasn't listed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a substantially greater area than just the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the coming decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town which has seen increased development in the past few years.
