The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood in all probability since the sixth century. The commune as it was wasn't listed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a substantially wider area than only the town itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not applied until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
