Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage picked up in the area give proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the local area in all probability from the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a considerably wider area than merely the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the ensuing generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town which has seen increased development in the past several years.
