Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past going back to the days of the Romans, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage uncovered in the area show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were residing in the area almost certainly since the sixth century. The village existing at that time wasn't documented till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a far larger area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may likely have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be put on prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's witnessed greater development in recent years.
