Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old relics and coins stumbled upon nearby offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market in about the tenth century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the region quite possibly since the sixth century. The commune existing then is not reported until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a substantially greater area than just the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the succeeding generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that's seen accelerated development in current times.
