Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a historic past going back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the region possibly from the sixth century. The commune as it was is not reported until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a far larger area than only the town itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't put in until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the following generations and the building of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town which has witnessed improved development in the past few years.
