Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the era of the Romans, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it can be found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins discovered in the area give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood probably since the 6th Century. The commune as it was isn't cited till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a lot greater area than merely the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added on up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the construction of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town which has seen improved development in recent times.
