Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early relics and coins stumbled upon nearby show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who developed a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were residing in the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The commune as it was was not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a far larger area than only the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name might possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't appended until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the coming decades and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has witnessed greater development in current times.
