Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits near the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early relics and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered show that they were inhabiting the local area almost certainly from the sixth century. The settlement existing then wasn't discussed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a considerably wider area than only the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't put in till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
