Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins picked up in close proximity give proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who created a market in about the 10th Century, and relics unearthed show that they were staying in the region most likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't reported until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a significantly wider area than just the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be appended until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the following years and the development of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed improved development in the past few years.
