Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were settling the area quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was isn't referred to until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a far larger area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the ensuing generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few decades.
