Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins found nearby give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts picked up reveal that they were staying in the neighbourhood probably from the sixth century. The village as it was is not discussed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a significantly larger area than only the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not included before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding generations and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town which has witnessed greater development in recent times.
