Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage picked up in close proximity show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were settling the region quite likely since the sixth century. The village as such was not discussed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a lot bigger area than just the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town that's witnessed improved development in recent years.
