Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to Roman times, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins discovered in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and relics picked up suggest that they were residing in the area quite likely from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not reported till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a substantially bigger area than simply the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be put on prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the following decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town which has seen improved development in the past several years.
