Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past harping back to Roman days, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled on in the area give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts picked up imply that they were inhabiting the area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The village as it was isn't mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a lot greater area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put in up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the following generations and the building of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
