Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lies very close to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who created a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were inhabiting the local area quite likely from the sixth century. The commune existing at that time is not reported till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embodied a lot larger area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not appended till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the following generations and the establishing of of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town that's seen increased development in recent years.
