Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage stumbled upon nearby offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered indicate that they were inhabiting the locale perhaps from the 6th Century. The commune as it was isn't discussed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a much wider area compared to the town alone, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't appended prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the ensuing years and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town which has seen increased development in the past several years.
