Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a past stretching back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area offer proof of this. The historic Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon mean that they were staying in the vicinity undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement existing then isn't observed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a far greater area than only the town itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be put on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
