Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage discovered nearby offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics picked up show that they were staying in the local area more than likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not referred to till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a considerably larger area compared to the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added on before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the coming years and the development of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
