Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it can be found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old relics and coinage found in close proximity offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were staying in the local area undoubtedly since the sixth century. The village as it was then wasn't listed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a substantially greater area than simply the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't put on till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following years and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that's seen greater development in current times.
