Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story extending back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage uncovered near by show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who introduced the market place during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite likely from the sixth century. The village as it was then was not cited till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a lot wider area than just the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put in up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
