Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a past going back to Roman days, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is placed next to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage stumbled upon near by give evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon suggest that they were residing in the local area perhaps since the sixth century. The commune as it was then wasn't listed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a considerably greater area than simply the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town that has seen increased development in the past several years.
