Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman days, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins picked up near by offer proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who developed a market during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the locale very likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was was not mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a substantially greater area compared to the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put in till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the coming decades and the building of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has seen improved development in the past few decades.
