Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins unearthed nearby offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were living in the neighbourhood in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a far bigger area than just the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get included till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing during the ensuing decades and the construction of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town that has witnessed increased development in the last few years.
