Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a story stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage uncovered near by show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed reveal that they were living in the region almost certainly since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time wasn't cited until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a much wider area than simply the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be included before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
