Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage uncovered near by offer proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who introduced the market place in around the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were residing in the local area probably from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not observed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way wider area than merely the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get inserted prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the coming generations and the development of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has seen increased development in recent times.
