Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a historic past extending back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins unearthed near by offer evidence of this. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts found show that they were dwelling in the region quite possibly from the sixth century. The village as it was is not described till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a significantly larger area than merely the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be included before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prosperous market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
