The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins found in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and artefacts discovered show that they were dwelling in the local area very likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't observed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a considerably wider area than only the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be inserted before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the ensuing years and the establishing of of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow.
