Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old relics and coins uncovered nearby offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were settling the region quite possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a substantially wider area compared to the town alone, and covered the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added on till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding generations and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that has seen improved development in current times.
