Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it sits close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage stumbled upon nearby show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were settling the area quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then is not reported till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a lot wider area than simply the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't appended until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the coming generations and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has seen accelerated development in recent times.
