Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed in the area offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood in all probability since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time is not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a considerably wider area than only the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that has seen accelerated development in the past few years.
