Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed very close to the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins found in the area show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the region more than likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then is not described until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a lot greater area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get appended before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has seen increased development in current times.
