Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins unearthed in the area give proof of this. The old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place in around the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were settling the area most likely since the sixth century. The village as such was not remarked upon until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a way wider area than just the town alone, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added on till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding through the coming years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen improved development in recent times.
