Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story stretching back to Roman days, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found near the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic relics and coins discovered in close proximity give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market during the tenth century, and artifacts found denote that they were inhabiting the vicinity quite possibly since the sixth century. The village as it was is not discussed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a lot wider area than only the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the succeeding years and the building of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few years.
