Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins unearthed in the area offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were residing in the region in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time was not cited till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a far greater area than just the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be inserted till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the succeeding generations and the construction of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's seen increased development in modern times.
