Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins found near by give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who introduced a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were residing in the area quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not documented till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a significantly larger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't inserted prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding years and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has seen greater development in the past several years.
