Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage picked up in the area show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts found show that they were residing in the local area most likely from the sixth century. The commune existing then isn't listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a far larger area than only the town alone, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added on prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the succeeding decades and the development of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop.
