Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins uncovered nearby give proof of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market in about the tenth century, and relics found show that they were residing in the area more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't remarked upon until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a much larger area than simply the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put in prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the succeeding years and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town that's seen greater development in recent years.
