Based in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a past extending back to the times of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins picked up in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were dwelling in the region very likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not observed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a way wider area than merely the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be included till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has witnessed increased development in modern times.
