Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage unearthed near by give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were settling the local area quite possibly from the sixth century. The village as it was then wasn't observed until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a substantially greater area than just the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't applied prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
