Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about 37,000 and a historic past harping back to Roman days, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found near to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage unearthed in the area show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were staying in the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a way greater area than simply the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger over the coming years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen accelerated development in recent years.
