Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins stumbled upon nearby offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who developed the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were staying in the neighbourhood most likely from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time wasn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a much bigger area than merely the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be put on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the following generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town which has seen increased development in the past few years.
