Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins discovered in close proximity show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were residing in the vicinity most probably from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a lot wider area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not applied prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the coming years and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop.
