Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lies near the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage found nearby give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts discovered reveal that they were residing in the local area most likely since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time is not reported till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a way bigger area compared to the town alone, and included the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put on prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen increased development in recent years.
