Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage unearthed nearby show proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the local area quite likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was wasn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a much larger area than just the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will probably have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be appended till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger throughout the ensuing generations and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town which has seen greater development in current times.
