Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage unearthed nearby show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were dwelling in the vicinity in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not listed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a much wider area than only the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get appended prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the coming years and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town which has seen greater development in the past few decades.
