Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story going back to Roman days, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays close to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins unearthed in the area show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered reveal that they were settling the locale quite possibly from the sixth century. The village as it was then wasn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a significantly wider area than only the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be put on prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the following years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's witnessed increased development in the last few years.
