Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found next to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins found in the area offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, came through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and relics discovered suggest that they were residing in the local area undoubtedly since the sixth century. The village as such was not reported till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a way wider area compared to the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be put on up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the development of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop.
