Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a historical past extending back to the Roman era, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage discovered near by give evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon suggest that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood in all likelihood from the sixth century. The settlement as such is not described until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a way larger area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get inserted until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the succeeding generations and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has seen increased development in the past few years.
