Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace close to 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins discovered nearby give evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who created a market during the tenth century, and relics discovered reveal that they were staying in the neighbourhood in all likelihood since the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time isn't mentioned till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a considerably larger area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not appended prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the following years and the building of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop.
