Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historical past going back to the Roman period, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage picked up nearby give proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts found suggest that they were dwelling in the vicinity quite possibly from the sixth century. The settlement existing then was not discussed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a far larger area than just the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the following decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town that has witnessed improved development in the past several years.
