Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins unearthed nearby show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were dwelling in the region in all probability from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then is not documented till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a substantially larger area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be appended prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the following years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
