Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the era of the Romans, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins unearthed nearby show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered show that they were living in the locale perhaps since the sixth century. The village as such is not remarked upon till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a much bigger area than just the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could very well have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be applied before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the succeeding generations and the development of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed greater development in the recent past.
