Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around 37,000 and a historic past harping back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get put on prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
