Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found next to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins stumbled on nearby give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market during the tenth century, and antiquities found mean that they were dwelling in the locale most probably since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time is not listed until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a much larger area than merely the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town which has seen accelerated development in the past few years.
