Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies near to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities found imply that they were settling the region more than likely from the sixth century. The commune as such is not listed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a lot larger area than just the town itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the coming years and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town which has seen improved development in the past few years.
