The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins uncovered nearby give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were settling the local area in all probability since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a considerably wider area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the coming years and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that's witnessed greater development in modern times.
