Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to the era of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early relics and coins discovered in the area offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered imply that they were dwelling in the area possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was was not discussed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a far wider area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put in before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the coming years and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town which has witnessed greater development in the recent past.
