Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the era of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage unearthed in the area show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the local area quite likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then is not described till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a significantly greater area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name will have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added on up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow.
