Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a story extending back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage stumbled upon nearby offer proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood almost certainly since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then wasn't discussed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a lot bigger area than merely the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added on up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the following generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow.
