Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins found in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who used a market during the tenth century, and relics found suggest that they were settling the local area probably since the sixth century. The village existing then wasn't discussed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a substantially greater area than only the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name could quite possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the following generations and the coming of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
