Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins stumbled upon near by offer proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were settling the region possibly from the sixth century. The village as it was then was not documented until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a substantially wider area than just the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could quite possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get put in till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's seen increased development in modern times.
