Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around 37,000 and a heritage extending back to Roman days, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found near the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage found in the area give proof of this. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were staying in the neighbourhood very likely from the sixth century. The commune existing at that time wasn't listed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a much wider area than just the town alone, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't inserted till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed greater development in recent times.
