Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early relics and coinage unearthed in the area offer proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the local area quite possibly since the 6th Century. The village as such was not observed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a way greater area than only the town itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that has seen increased development in the past several years.
