Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a historic past extending back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found near the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage picked up in the area show proof of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed reveal that they were inhabiting the region in all probability since the 6th Century. The village as it was is not listed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a significantly bigger area than only the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
