Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays next to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins stumbled upon near by show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, went through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed mean that they were residing in the area almost certainly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was isn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a way wider area than just the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name may well have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be inserted until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the coming decades and the building of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has witnessed increased development in recent times.
