Located in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history extending back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up indicate that they were living in the area probably from the sixth century. The village existing at that time was not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a substantially wider area compared to the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger during the succeeding generations and the development of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few years.
