Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical relics and coins stumbled upon nearby show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were residing in the region most likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing then is not observed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a much larger area than only the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get included up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town which has seen improved development in the recent past.
