Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the times of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found close to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed near by show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, came through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who introduced a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on show that they were residing in the region more than likely since the 6th Century. The commune existing then is not described till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a much bigger area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could quite possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the coming generations and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that's seen improved development in current times.
