Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past extending back to Roman times, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins picked up near by offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered reveal that they were staying in the area perhaps since the 6th Century. The commune as such is not listed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a far bigger area than only the town itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get put in until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
