Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies near to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early relics and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity show proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood perhaps since the 6th Century. The commune existing then isn't observed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a far larger area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be applied prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen greater development in recent times.
