Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is near the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a history going back to the times of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage picked up in the area offer proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place in about the tenth century, and relics found show that they were residing in the area in all likelihood since the sixth century. The commune as such isn't discussed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a way wider area than simply the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get included up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
