Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historical past harping back to the days of the Romans, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins found in the area offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the region perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't documented till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a way larger area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be applied before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's seen improved development in recent years.
