Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage stumbled upon nearby give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were residing in the area more than likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing then was not cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a much larger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't included till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town that's seen increased development in the past few decades.
