Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to Roman times, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early relics and coins found nearby give evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered denote that they were settling the local area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a considerably wider area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be appended until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the following years and the construction of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that's seen improved development in recent years.
