Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage picked up in the area offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on indicate that they were settling the vicinity almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune existing then isn't referred to till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a far wider area than just the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the ensuing decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that has seen greater development in the past few decades.
