Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the days of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins found in close proximity offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts discovered denote that they were settling the area possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time isn't reported till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a significantly wider area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not applied up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger during the following decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that's witnessed improved development in modern times.
