Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is located close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins unearthed near by show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were settling the area probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was was not documented till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a significantly bigger area than merely the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get inserted before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following decades and the establishing of of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that has witnessed improved development in recent years.
