Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage uncovered in the area give evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and relics unearthed show that they were inhabiting the local area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune existing then wasn't listed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a much bigger area than simply the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get included prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the coming decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town that has seen increased development in current times.
